Han Kang Reading Guide: Every Book Ranked and Where to Start

Han Kang won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2024 — the first South Korean and first Asian woman to receive it. If you're coming to her work for the first time, here's the ideal reading order based on accessibility and thematic depth.

Han Kang Books: Best Reading Order

Start with: The Vegetarian (2007) — Slim, intense, and immediately gripping. Three linked novellas about a woman who stops eating meat and the violence this provokes in her family. Winner of the International Booker Prize 2016. Then: Human Acts (2014) — A devastating account of the 1980 Gwangju Uprising and its aftermath across decades. More political and historical. Then: The White Book (2016) — A meditation on grief, whiteness, and loss. Closer to prose poetry. Then: The Vegetarian (re-read) — The second read reveals layers you missed the first time.
